When most people think about enlightenment they usually think about meditation, sitting down and repeating a mantra without any physical activity. Or more likely they would think about yoga but exercising doesn’t really come to mind when we talk about getting enlightened, yet it should. Actually yoga asanas were created by yogis because they noticed their bodies were deteriorating because of how many hours they spent meditating while simply sitting down. In today’s modern world the average person spends many hours a day sitting down while at work, in front of the computer or watching TV.
Research shows that immediately after you sit down the electrical activity in your muscles slows down and your calorie burning rate drops to one calorie per minute (about 1/3 compared to walking). If you sit down for more than 6 hours a day for two weeks your muscles start to atrophy and your maximum oxygen consumption drops.
